Durant cette période, mille éditions illustrées et dix mille bois gravés sortent de la dizaine d'ateliers actifs à Strasbourg. La profusion, la cohérence et la qualité de ces illustrations autorisent à parler d'une école strasbourgeoise de gravure. Le plus prolifique des ateliers strasbourgeois est celui de Jean Grüninger. Le présent volume est consacré à sa production des années 1507-1512. Elle se caractérise par le perfectionnement de la technique de combinaison des bois, qui permet de former des images par juxtaposition de plusieurs bois gravés. Elle est notamment utilisée dans le Décaméron de Boccace ou dans les Vies des Pères de l'Église, présentés dans cet ouvrage. Des gravures en pleine page illustrent des épisodes de la Guerre des Gaules ou de la Passion de Geiler. D'autres servent à illustrer des aspects de la vie quotidienne (économie domestique, distillation, cure thermale, traités pédagogiques) à une époque où l'éducation est au cur des discours humanistes et où s'impriment les premiers livres en langue vulgaire. Après un premier volume consacré à la production de Jean Grüninger des années 1501-1506 et un deuxième consacré à la production de sept autres imprimeurs actifs à la même époque, la Bibliothèque nationale et universitaire de Strasbourg, avec le concours de nombreux partenaires, poursuit la publication des gravures d'illustration parues en Alsace au XVIe siècle. Ce troisième volume, Jean Grüninger, 1507-1512, regroupe 565 gravures, accompagnées d'une étude sur les livres recensés et d'un index développé en français et en allemand. Dès la fin du XVIe siècle, Strasbourg est l'un des plus importants centres de production de bois…gravés destinés à l'illustration des livres. Plus de 20 000 bois différents sont en effet sortis des ateliers strasbourgeois de 1470 à 1600. Alors que la presque totalité des gravures publiées de 1470 à 1500 a déjà été reproduite par A. Schramm, on ne dispose pas de répertoires pour les années suivantes. Aussi la Bibliothèque Nationale et Universitaire de Strasbourg, avec le concours de l'Université Marc Bloch et du Conseil Régional, a-t-elle entrepris de publier les gravures qui illustrent les ouvrages alsaciens à partir de 1501. Chaque volume consacré à un ou plusieurs imprimeurs contient la reproduction des gravures au format original, une étude sur les livres recensés et leurs illustrations et un index iconographique développé en français et en allemand. Ce premier volume contient 633 gravures sur bois produites par Jean Grüninger, le plus prolifique des imprimeurs strasbourgeois, pour la période allant de 1501 à 1506 parmi lesquelles le célèbre ensemble illustrant les uvres de Virgile paru en 1502.
