"Although it had a wide practical use, the Durant Code, as this volume was commonly known, was never officially approved; it lacked the dates of passage of most of the laws, and the council is said to have refused in consequence to pay for its printing. 500 copies were ordered printed. Alexander Richard Durant (b. 1839), a Choctaw lawyer and sometime Presbyterian preacher, was at various times speaker of the lower house of the Choctaw Council, journalist of the Senate, national secretary, attorney general, supreme judge, national delegate, and a candidate for the office of principal chief.
