It lists his books and plays (with copious descriptive notes, drawing upon many unpublished manuscripts and letters, giving the full history of each major work), essays, short stories and poems, his contributions to books by other writers, his more than six hundred and fifty contributions to periodicals (including book reviews and letters), and his recordings, radio and television broadcasts and ephemera. There is a section devoted to the many published translations of his work, a detailed listing of manuscripts and typescripts in the principal collections of his papers, and, finally, a section devoted to stage premieres and notable stage revivals of his plays and details of film versions of them. The descriptive commentary will be useful to the collector, as a detailed listing not only of first editions but of subsequent ones (some of them considerably revised but not, in fact, recognised as new editions in some cases even in the printed text). For the scholar, it will be an indispensable guide to the many revisions and rewritings of plays and prose writings: O'Casey, like Yeats, was an inveterate reviser throughout his career, but none of the existing literary studies has yet given adequate attention to this facet of his work. Moreover, scholars and students will also be introduced to many occasional publications (often in obscure journals) not collected by O'Casey nor recorded in any published studies of his work. The compilers have been given generous access to the playwright's private papers and to the files of the publisher who printed all his dramatic writings throughout the major portion of his writing life.
