Final Script for the 1938 film. Loosely based on the events surrounding the construction of the Suez Canal, the film stirred controversy upon its release when the descendants of main characters Matthieu and Ferdinand de Lesseps unsuccessfully sued the studio for libel. With all the elaborate costuming, special effects, and production costs typical of a Zanuck picture, its cinematic qualities do their best to offset what can only be called a very unique take on historical accuracy. Nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Cinematography, Best Original Score, and Best Sound Recording. Power and Annabella were married shortly after the film's release. A classic underrated Dwan film, a revenge western in which a young gunslinger (Scott Brady) seeks to avenge his father's killings, and Anne Bancroft plays a young Native American girl who falls in love with him along the way. Written by the pulp fiction writer Steve Fisher, one of few who would successfully transition from pulps to Hollywood films, with credits including film noirs such as "Lady in the Lake," "Song of the Thin Man," "Johnny Angel," and many more. Contemporary annotations in manuscript pencil on the versos. Years after abandoning his daughter to an orphanage, a wealthy painter attempts a reconciliation. The original film premiered in 1915, directed by Allan Dwan, but was destroyed in a fire shortly after its release, and is today considered lost. The film was re-made with the same cast, directed by John B. O'Brien, and released in 1916. One 8.75 x 8 inches, the other 10 x 8 inches.
