Fourth printing of this edition, with an essay by Bernard Shaw, and dustwrapper illustration by Lynton Lamb. The book was first printed in the World's Classics series in 1936, and reprinted in 1944, 1951 and this edition in 1961. ***Near fine in navy-blue cloth-covered boards, with a blind-stamped OUP crest on the front board and gilt titles to the spine. The gilt is still beautifully bright, having been protected by the dustwrapper. The boards are clean and unmarked. No bumps or tears to the cloth. Corners sharp. Page block edges clean with no foxing. Internally also near fine with no inscriptions or annotations. Pages clean. Printed on very thin India paper but with no creases or tears. Spine tight. ***In a very good dustwrapper, with front panel illustration by Lynton Lamb. The dustwrapper has not been price-clipped, but there is an O.U.P. 8/6 net price label over the original printed price on the front flap. The dustwrapper is complete without any creasing or tears. There is some slight edge wear and a small closed tear at the top of the front panel. The cerise colour has slightly faded on the spine of the dustwrapper. Dustwrapper bright. ***421 pages including a nine page Essay and a Note on the Author at the front of the book. 155 mm x 98 mm. ***'Samuel Butler (1835-1902) was educated at Shrewsbury and Cambridge, and, as the son of a clergyman and grandson of a bishop, intended for the Church. His refusal to take Orders greatly angered his father, and he emigrated to New Zealand, where in five years he had made enough money by sheep-farming to enable him to return to London in 1864. He published two satires, "Erewhon" (1872) and "Erewhon Revisited (1901); several books attacking Darwinism; and translations of the "Iliad" and the "Odyssey", which he argued in "Authoress of the Odyssey", was the work of a woman. Selections from his "Notebooks" appeared posthumously in 1912. His most famous book, however, is "The Way of All Flesh" also published posthumously in 1903, an ironic attack on the Victorian family pattern based upon his own unhappy childhood. Butler's original and advanced ideas particularly influenced George Bernard Shaw, who wrote th introduction to this edition.'
