François le Champi (translated as François the Waif or The Country Waif) is a classic 1848 pastoral novel by French author George Sand. Set in the rural Berry region, it tells the story of an abandoned orphan boy named François and Madeleine, a compassionate miller's wife who helps raise him. A prefatory note by the translator calls the work a pretty idyl that tells of homely affection, self-devotion, humble cares and delicate fears.
