Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book re-examines the nature of the English Reformation and challenges the common misconception that the founders of the Anglican Church held Erastian views. The author posits that Cranmer and the other reformists both affirmed the divine institution of episcopacy and believed priests must be ordained. During the reign of Henry VIII, many bishops and theologians believed that the king had supreme authority in religious matters. However, the author demonstrates that this view was contradicted by the preface to the Ordinal of 1549, which mandated that no one could administer the sacraments without a bishop's approval and ordination. This book argues that the 23rd and 36th Articles of the Church of England, as well as the Ordinal, all written or revised under Archbishop Parker, further confirm the centrality of bishops and the necessity of ordination. The author demonstrates that while some of the bishops and theologians who met in 1540 to discuss the sacraments held opinions at odds with Cranmer and this later consensus, they were not representative of the founders of the Anglican Church, whose views on episcopacy were much more traditional. The author explores the history of the Church of England, focusing on the unbroken line of bishops from the apostles to the present day and the necessity of episcopal ordination. These sermons, originally preached at Exeter Cathedral, examine the nature of apostolic succession, the importance of the sacraments, and the role of the clergy within the Church. The author draws on the writings of prominent theologians and church fathers to support his arguments and provides a comprehensive defense of the Anglican Church's position on these issues. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
