Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book explores the complex economic realities of educated working women at the turn of the 20th century, a time when women were beginning to gain access to higher education but still faced significant social and economic barriers. The author, writing in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, engages with a broader historical and literary context that includes the writings of Mary Wollstonecraft and Maria Edgeworth, both of whom advocated for the rights and education of women. The book examines the expectation of marriage as it affects women's work, arguing that a significant number of women will remain unmarried, and that this fact has significant implications for their economic independence. The author analyzes the labor market for women in three distinct groups: the poor, well-to-do artisans, and the upper classes. The author delves into the issue of women's intellectual and emotional development in relation to their roles in society. While acknowledging the potential for women to be "absorbed" in their work and less likely to marry, the author ultimately argues that economic independence is essential for women's happiness and fulfillment, and that their contributions to society go beyond the traditional roles of wife and mother. This book provides a fascinating and insightful look at the social and economic landscape of women's lives at the turn of the 20th century.
