Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Fair. 1st Edition. E. Frederic Morrow. Black Man in the White House: A Diary of the Eisenhower Years by the Administrative Officer for Special Projects, The White House, 1955-1961. New York: Coward-McCann, Inc., 1963, first edition with original dust jacket, INSCRIBED by author E. Frederic Morrow. 308 pp,…8.5 x 5.5". In fair condition. DJ exhibits the most wear with scuffed edges & corners, toning, and general soiling. DJ's front and rear flaps exhibit some tearing at heads & tails, as well as paper spine. Bottom edge of DJ's front cover exhibits a tear which impedes the word "Projects" after author's name. Rear cover of DJ is discolored from soiling, but still legible. White paper boards are toned and generally soiled as well. Head and tail of blue cloth spine collapsed - gilt lettering overall bright and clean. Author's inscription found on front end-page: "September 9th, 1963. To Bill Kilbourne, an old associate and trust friend. With warm regard, from the author, E. Frederic Morrow." Toning throughout text-block, especially around edges. Some instances of finger-soiling. Binding tight and intact. Please see photos. Everett Frederic Morrow (1909-1994) was the first African American to hold an executive position at the White House. He served President Dwight Eisenhower as Administrative Officer for Special Projects from 1955 to 1961. After serving on Eisenhower's 1952 campaign staff, Morrow served as an advisor at the U.S. Commerce Department. The White House Historical Association wrote of his tenure: "As the sole African American on a staff dealing with racial tensions related to integration, Morrow faced difficult personal and professional struggles at the White House. The Supreme Court's landmark Brown v. Board of Education ruling, the Montgomery bus boycott, and the Little Rock crisis were the backdrop of Morrow's White House years. On a staff with a civil-rights policy that was at best cautious, Morrow was often frustrated and angered." In 1964, Morrow became the first African American vice-president of Bank of America, retiring from the company in 1975. Incredibly important American history - inscribed by author. Gift quality.
