The second of the two versions of Arlington's signature reproduced by Rawlins ('Five Hundred Years of British Autographs', p.63, no.8). Arlington was the first 'A' in the CABAL ministry, the name made up of the initials of the five privy councillors who conducted Charles II's government after the fall of Clarendon in 1667: Clifford, Arlington, Buckingham, Ashley and Lauderdale.

Condizione: Good. - Approximately 17 words penned on a 5 inch high by 4-1/2 inch white piece of creamy white paper. Villiers writes that he has "much pleasure in sending" his autograph. He signs the note "Clarendon". There is minor staining to the sheet and it has been mounted on a slightly larger piece of heavier stock. Good. George William Frederick Villiers, 4th Earl of Clarendon (1800-1870) was an English diplomat who served as Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1847 to 1852 and twice as Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs.

The letter, addressed to an unnamed recipient, begins: 'My dear Sir | Before I quitted Office I communicated to the Court of directors the Draft of an Insolvent Bill & some letters on the subject which I had received from the Judges in India, together with a request that they might be laid before you for your opinion & observations.' He should like the opportunity to talk over the subject with him, as he considers himself 'pledged to bring the measure forward [in the House of Commons]' with the approval of the present Board. The last paragraph relates to a 'Bill for consolidating & amending the Criminal Law in India which Mr Groom undertook to prepare & for which the Chairman promised me that he should have the assistance of Mr. Lawford & through him of yourself'. Williams-Wynn held office in both Tory and Whig administrations.

When I saw her about 10 days ago I said I would find someone myself. [.] I do hope you do not think that we were simply putting out feelers and asking two people so as to make sure of getting one.'.

Begins: 'Lord Carnarvon presents his Compliments to Mrs. Page and is extremely obliged by her polite attention in sending him the Papers relating to the boundaries of Highclere - Burghclere, and Woodhay Parishes, which he has no doubt will prove extremely useful to him'. He has 'many apologies to make for not sooner acknowledging the receipt of the Papers, but he has been for some time past incessantly occupied in attending the Committee on the Gt. Western Railway in the House of Lords'. He is anxious to express 'the sincere concern he experienced in the loss of Colonel Page, whose inestimable qualities as a Friend and Neighbour had been so long known, and were so fully appreciated by Lord C. and all his Family. Lord C. trusts Mrs Page is herself in the Enjoyment of perfect health -'.

4to, 1 p. Text clear and complete. On aged and creased paper. He is returning the score, and asks Hedgely to 'copy the three voice parts of the two canons Criste Eleison & Crucifixus & the Voice part of the Soprano Song, Gratias Agimus', and to send the whole back 'as soon as you can finish them'.
