Deconstruction & post-structuralism are fully discussed as are 106 national poetries. Prepared by recognized authorities, the articles in this massive book treat the topics in sufficient depth to satisfy the scholar, but are written w/ such accessible lucidity that they will also please the general reader. Entries vary in length from relatively brief notices to substantial articles up-to & exceeding 20,000 words. The original "Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics" was first published in 1965 & was quickly recognized as the standard work in the field. In 1974, the Enlarged Edition increased the entires w/ dozens of new subjects, including structuralism, hermeneutics, & Afro-American poetry, among many others. Since the 1970s, there has been an explosion of knowledge within literary & cultural studies, sweeping changes which required an expanded & fully updated edition. This, "The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics" is that edition, completely updated, with more than 90% of the original entires substantially revised, & most major entries entirely rewritten. There are 162 completely new entires--on cultural criticism, feminist poetics, & Chicano poetry, among others--& this new edition is 50% larger than the original 1965 edition. This new edition preserves all the invaluable content of the previous editions & adds what was needed. All the recent developments in theory that bear on poetry are treated, bibliographies of secondary sources are expanded; cross-references within entries & by means of "blind-entries" have been expanded for greater ease of use; & coverage of emergent & non-Western poetries is dramatically increased. A hall-mark of the encyclopedia is its worldwide orientation on the poetry of national & cultural groups. "The New Princeton Encyclopedia of Poetry and Poetics" stands today as the unique & essential reference for anyone interested in poetry, literature in general, or literary theory & criticism. * ABOUT THE EDITORS: ALEX PREMINGER is formerly Associate Professor & Chief of the Humanities Division, Brooklyn College Library, The City University of New York.
