With the aid of Shelley's prose writings, especially On Life and Speculations on Metaphysics, the author establishes the philosophical setting of the poem and explicates it within that context. Mr. Wassirman proposes that Shelley was not the disciple of anyone philosopher or phllosophical system. Influenced by the ideas of Plato, Locke, Berkeley, Hume, and others, he was an eclectic, who developed his own metaphysics and ontology. Mr. Wasserman set's forth Shelley's philosophy, his own brands of idealism and empiricism~and then analyzes Prometheus Unbound in light of that philosophy. Thus this study helps to provide the connective lines between Shelley's thought and his poetry. Mr. Wasserman finds Shelley's philosophical ideas carried out primarily in his use of myth. One of the main concerns of the book is with the use of myth and myth~making in the poem. For Shelley the elements of myth were pre~eminently thoughts. He assimilated into Prometheus Unbound only the forms of the conventional myths about Prometheus and those used by Aeschylus. Mr. Wasserman discusses the way in which Shelley transformed these myths and adjusted them to his own philosophy. This critical study also discusses the symbolic cosmology of Prometheus Unbound, showing how Shelley made an assumed world structure serve as a metaphor for the entire poem. The roles of the various characters in the play are analyzed and a chapter is devoted to Shelley's treatment of time in the poem.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Printed in the U.S.A. First Printing. Editor's note on the title page, Footnotes, Illustrations, Sheet Music, Index; vi, 346 pages. The original red cloth is particularly attractive, with gilt lettering on the gently-bumped spine as bright as if just issued. The interior is equally fine---creamy-bright and completely clean. The original printed fragile dustjacket is unclipped, though the spine is gently sunned; there are several chips and tears, but no text is affected. [Please see my five images of the actual book.] "In recognition of the complex and many-faceted nature of the eighteenth century, we intentionally neglected to focus on any single theme that might artificially bind the sessions together, and the chapters in this book display the rich variety of perspectives in which the culture of that age may be viewed." Contributors: W. J. Bate, Isaiah Berlin, George Boas, Alfred Cobban, Henry Guerlac, Edward E. Lowinsky, Maynard Mack, Georges May, J. A. Passmore, Heinz Politzer, Jean Seznec, Rene Wellek, and R. Wittkower. As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage.
