Viele Untersuchungen wurden in diesem Zusammenhang von »Selbsthilfe«-Spezialisten durchgeführt, die für gewöhnlich bloße Selbstbehauptung mit dem inneren Wachstum der Persönlichkeit verwechseln. Besonderen Nachdruck legen sie auf Verhaltensmuster sozialer Anpassung, die jedoch kaum mehr versprechen als ein vorübergehendes Wohlbefinden, eine flüchtige Befriedigung; und so wirken sich ihre »Heilmittel« nur als eine neue Spielart der eigentlichen Krankheit aus. Alle diese Beiträge lassen etwas erschreckend deutlich vermissen: es ist ? man kann es nicht anders bezeichnen ? ein moralischer Standpunkt. Statt dessen wird das menschliche Leben wie eine Art Maschine gesehen, die regelmäßig gewartet werden muß; die Nöte des Lebens lassen sich »reparieren«. Was ist aber nun unter dem moralischen Standpunkt zu verstehen, und in welchem Verhältnis steht er zum menschlichen Glück? Diese Fragen wurden schon von Sokrates aufgeworfen, und sie haben den philosophischen Diskurs seit rund 2000 Jahren immer wieder neu belebt. Ohne an dieser Stelle in Einzelheiten zu gehen, möchten wir aber doch hier schon festhalten, daß der moralische Standpunkt da anfängt, wo der Mensch sich seiner eigenen Transzendenz bewußt wird; er beginnt mit der Erkenntnis, daß die Menschen sich von den rein materiellen Gegebenheiten, die den physikalischen Kosmos ausmachen, unterscheiden und über sie hinausweisen. Wo diese Erkenntnis blockiert oder unterdrückt oder geringgeschätzt wird, ist das Leben nicht mehr im eigentlichen Sinne menschlich zu nennen.
