Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. 149 pages with a 2 page list of other books at the rear, turquoise cloth, dustwrapper dusty, minor edge wear, small octavo. INCLUDED: A 6 page handwritten letter is loosely inserted from Alan Edan-Green the war-time pacifist who later worked for the government after the war. It is sent to a Rev Thomas Wrigley of (we think Stoke or Stafford) who was a sometime book reviewer. The letter berates both Churchill and Vanisttart for the heavy propaganda they showed over the sinking of 3 German U-boats, etc. There is a criticism of Hitler too. The letter is mostly about putting your Christianity above citizenship and is a polite but firm letter on the recipients faith and his views on the war which seems to differ. Alan Eden-Green (brief details) Member and founder of the Peoples Pledge Union and friend of Vera Brittain, a Blackheath based Pacifist group who were attacked and bound over by the courts during the 2nd WW.The PPU remained active in Blackheath with its local branch meeting at the home of its secretaries Alan and Winifred Eden-Green of 2 Talbot Place SE3. As well as supporting 'distressed COs' they set up a Pacifist Service Unit to provide welfare help in the local community. Alan Eden-Green (1916-1997) was a conscientious objector during the Second World War who 'performed voluntary work for Woolwich Council in the blitz, driving mobile canteens and putting up Anderson shelters for the elderly, he worked as assistant to author Vera Brittain another prominent pacifist through the war years and on to 1962. The Eden-Greens later edited a collection of Brittain's war time letters in which they recalled that 'two attempts were made to set the Blackheath Peace Shop on fire' and that an Army Major had threatened to shoot them both (Testament of a Peace Lover: Letters from Vera Brittain, Virago, 1988). Pacifism. Rare detailed letter of his beliefs.

Contains [xv] 612 printed pages of text with monochrome tables, figures, charts, illustrations and colour photographs throughout. In a field of mature bananas, plants can be seen at all stages of vegetative growth and fruit maturity, providing a fascination for anyone who has an interest in growing crops. Banana farmers in the tropics can harvest fruit every day of the year. The absence of seasonality in production is an advantage, in that it provides a continuity of carbohydrate to meet dietary needs as well as a regular source of income, a feature that perhaps has been under-estimated by rural planners and agricultural strategists. The burgeoning interest in bananas in the last 20 years results from the belated realization that Musa is an under-exploited genus, notwithstanding the fact that one genetically narrow group, the Cavendish cultivars, supply a major export commodity second only to citrus in terms of the world fruit trade. International research interest in the diversity of fruit types has been slow to develop, presumably because bananas and plantains have hitherto been regarded as a reliable backyard source of dessert fruit or starch supplying the needs of the household, and in this situation relatively untroubled by pests, diseases or agronomic problems. In Fine condition, no dust wrapper as issued. SIGNED by one of the contributors 'Simon Eden-Green' to the front free end paper. We carry this book in stock for immediate dispatch.
