Hardcover. Condizione: VG+. Third Impression. This impressive publication tells the story of the sailing drifters and herring luggers that operated out of major fishing ports in England, Scotland and the Isles of Man, small craft that could trace their origins back to the 15th centrury when the traditional one square sail began to give wayy to craft with two or even three masts and sails of several shapes to take advantage of winds from different points of the compass. Large fleets of these small craft fished the coastal waters and this work by Edgar March, a noted nautical historian, provides detailed information on all branches of the industry, dealing not only with the little ships but also the men who sailed them, how boat designs and fishing techniques evolved, follows the fishing seasons, netting methods, species targeted, catch handling and disposal and the construction practices for drifters and luggers. The hazards inevitably encountered, boats lost, and the men, successes and adversities are.included. The numbers of these small fishing craft peaked in the 1800s with more than 1000 of the type registered at Great Yarmouth alone in the late 1890s. March also records that by 1913 there were only 192 sailing drifters to be found in English ports. Such was the rapid decline of the once very large fishing fleets, made up of the craft so comprehensively recorded in this exceptional book --- a history that recognises the important part played in the fisheries of the British Isles, extending to these small but vital boats a coverage equal to that usually accorded only to the ocean greyhounds or famous fighting ships. While tangible relics from the age of the sailing drifter may today be few, Edgar March has confirmed their place in maritime history with this publication. He noted in his introduction that: "My reseach into the old way of fishing was only just in time. Many of the fine fishermen I knew found it surprising that I should find worth recording what was to them just a way of life, but here in these pages their story remains for all time." "Sailing Drifters" was first published in 1952, re-issued in 1969 with this third impression from David and Charles in 1972, 382 pages including, a plans section, glossary, list of plates, llist of figures and index. The author's excellent text material is complemented by a remarkable collection of 191 b/w photographs, plus a photo frontis, there are 76 figures in text (drawingsi or diagrams) mostly relatiing to boat equipment or fittings, construction detail, masts and rigging etc, plus 27 scale plans spread over more than 50 pages, mostly in high detail and representive of typical "Sailing Drifter" type craft . (The plans and on-board photographs would be invaluabe to ship modellers! Green hard cover with gilt spine titles are VG+, circular impressesd former owner stamp lower corner FFEP, no iwritten inscriptions, one informative neat ink note adjacent one photograph (177), with one word inked in the margin of page 256, text block and illustrations otherwise excellent. Colour art dust jacket is G with chips/short tears to upper/lower edges, small sections missing spine top/base, tape repairs to few tears, due to wear along the jacket spine ridge the jacket rear panel and flap had become separated but is now secured by careful tape repair. This is a heavy book at more than 1,2kg unpacked; would require additional postage for international delivery. Contact vendor for accurate pricing.
