Ingaggiato dall'ambizioso Genoa Cricket and Football Club nel 1912, che per pagarlo dovette aggirare nei modi più fantasiosi la legge che proibiva il professionismo e quindi la retribuzione di un salario, "Mister Pipetta", Willy Garbutt, ha di fatto inaugurato il fortunato ruolo dell'allenatore. All'epoca, le squadre di calcio italiane non avevano un vero e proprio assetto tattico, e la disposizione in campo veniva decisa dal capitano, per questo Garbutt può essere considerato a tutti gli effetti il primo allenatore, nell'accezione moderna del termine, del nostro campionato. Il primo a condurre allenamenti mirati e a utilizzare tattiche e strategie come un qualunque allenatore di oggi. Nelle mani di Garbutt, il Genoa vinse tre scudetti. Nel 1927 passò alla neonata A.S. Roma, con la quale vinse subito una Coppa Coni, e al Napoli la stagione successiva. Venne fortemente voluto da Pozzo con la Nazionale italiana ai Mondiali del 1934, alle Olimpiadi del 1936 e ai Mondiali del 1938.
