Issued as a decorative small-format literary gift book. An engaging collection of French aphorisms, observations, and reflections on human nature, love, ambition, virtue, and society, featuring sayings attributed to Francois de La Rochefoucauld, Honore de Balzac, Sebastien Chamfort, Joseph Joubert, Voltaire, George Sand, Madame de Stael, Marguerite de Valois, and Stendhal. The text is accompanied by charming drawings by Fritz Kredel, including period-costumed figures, ornamental flourishes, and decorative vignettes printed in a warm reddish-brown tone. The striking pictorial cloth binding continues the historical imagery across both covers, creating an especially pleasing example of Peter Pauper Press book design. Condition: Very Good. Attractive original pictorial cloth with generally bright, well-preserved decoration. Light rubbing and shelf wear to the extremities, including minor fraying at the spine ends and corners, with more noticeable wear at the upper and lower rear corners. Binding is firm and square. Interior pages are clean and pleasantly preserved, with mild age toning and a small isolated spot on a front blank leaf. No ownership inscriptions or markings. No dust jacket present. The Odenwald Museum's Fritz Kredel collection catalogue records this title under Peter Beilenson as editor, with Kredel as illustrator, and dates it 1950/1956. It assigns the work Kredel bibliography number Salter 1.232. Fritz Kredel (illustratore).…
