Written by 7 international experts on the Turkmen and their carpets, "Turkmen: Tribal Carpets and Traditions" is the most comprehensive publication on the subject. The carpets were made by nomadic tribes in Central Asia to decorate their camels and tents, and to serve utilitarian functions. Bags for storing dry goods were hung in tents and packed on animals during seasonal migrations. In Turkmen society, carpet weavings were the most prized possessions; in the West, they are the most admired of all Oriental carpets. In this volume, 95 Turkmen carpets, selected for their quality and beauty, are illustrated in magnificent color, most for the first time.
