Joseph Hall (1574-1656 ) was an English bishop, moral philosopher, and satirist. His contemporaries knew him as a devotional writer, and a high-profile controversialist of the early 1640s. His "Three Centuries of Meditations and Vows: Divine and Moral" is a collection of meditations and vows that were written over a span of three centuries, from the 15th to the 17th century. They are divided into three parts, with each part covering a century, and include works by various authors, including Thomas Kempis, John Calvin, and Richard Baxter. The meditations and vows cover a wide range of topics, including faith, love, humility, repentance, and the pursuit of holiness. The book is intended to be a source of inspiration and guidance for those seeking to deepen their spiritual lives. The text of the present edition is that of the 1621 edition; it being the last separate edition which appeared during Hall's lifetime. The book is bound in the original parchment or vellum covered boards with red titling on the spine and front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some soiling and staining to the boards and spine. The bottom of the spine is bumped. The contents are tight and clean with foxing to the first and last few pages and scattered light foxing elsewhere within the book. There is also foxing to the fore edge of the text block and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore margin. The front free endpaper has been inscribed thus: "With the editor's compliments and thanks. Cambridge, dec. 30. 1901".
