The Lamplighter by Maria Susanna Cummins (originally 1854) is a sentimental coming-of-age tale centered on Gertrude Flint, a neglected orphan rescued by Trueman Flint, a kind lamplighter. Through his guidance and her own perseverance, she grows into a morally upright and compassionate adult, ultimately finding heartfelt love and stability in her later life . Together, these two novellas offer heartfelt moral dramasone about sisterly rivalry and redemption, the other about resilience and virtue in the face of hardship.
