Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. First 4to, cloth-backed boards.xxiv+51 pp, 10 monochrome illustrations. In 1784 Jean-Antoine Houdon, the greatest portrait sculptor of the age, was commissioned by the Commonwealth of Virginia to execute an equestrian portrait of George Washington. He spent the autumn of 1785 in America, during which time he made a life mask of the General. Owing to various artistic, financial and political encumbrances, however, the statue was not delivered until 1796. Very good except for wear at the points and at the head and foot of the spine.
