Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrated with twenty-two full-page steel etchings by Cruikshank, all but two with tissue-guards and seventy-eight wood-cuts. A "new edition" published by Very good minus early edition book, no dust jacket. Red cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on front panel; gilt lettering and graphics on spine. Front and back board panels have multiple blind-stamped borders around bevelled edges. Boards are soiled, spine is sunned. Edges at head and tail of board spine are soft, split and fraying, the actual spine head and tail guards are missing. Several rubs along spine folds; Front corner at head of spine is split but a sloppy repair is holding it. Fore-edge corners are rubbed and turned-in. External page edges are age- and soil-darkened. Previous owner's bookplate on front paste-down. The verso to the title page has a number stamp, but this is the only potential indication of an ex-lib book. Gutters cracked in several places: At pp. viii and Cruikshank etching by Wagstaff, pp. 94-95, pp. 208-209, which makes the book slightly shaken but the text block is still relatively stable. Some foxing on text pages, especially around etchings. From page 94 - 300 (the last page) there is shallow creasing in the upper right page corners. Please use close-up options for best inspection and in support of condition descriptions. Additional photos available at your request. International sales to all countries other than the UK and Canada will require use of an alternative shipping company which will result in higher than the stated shipping costs. A signature upon receipt may also be required.

Hardcover. Condizione: Fair. George Cruikshank (illustratore). 'New Edition.' Illustrated with One Hundred Engravings on Steel and Wood. This is going to be a bit of a complicated listing. I have not listed this book as a signed book, however I'm going to price it, defensively, with that possibility in mind. I did search the Internet to see whether there was another signed copy of this title for sale. I didn't find one. I also spent some time reviewing examples of his signature and what I saw did not create the confidence to identify this as a signed book. On the second front end paper the following inscription, in pencil, is written: 'Louie (or Louis?) from brother (looks like brother) George, Christmas '74'. Cruikshank passed away in 1878. Take a look at the photo. It looks like the first 'e' in George was possibly changed, probably by the signer, but who knows. I tried to find out whether he had a brother named Louie or Louis. He had an older brother name Isaac. I don't think he had any other brothers. He had two wives. I can't find any information about their families. He also had a mistress, a former servant, who he had eleven children with. Anyway, that's the story. You can see the covers of the book in the photos provided. They are in pretty nice condition, taking into account the age of the book. There is rub-through at all four corners. The edges are in pretty good shape, just a little light rubbing at the bottom ones. There is a scratch over some of the gilt lettering on the spine. There is wear and slight loss at the spine ends. The book is square, but the binding is not terrific. I've provided a photograph of a detachment in the middle of the book. Otherwise there are gatherings that are pulling away from one another, though not yet detached. Positively, the pages are very clean. In fact, in scrolling through them I only found one small spot on both sides of one page. I certainly could have missed a few, but clearly the pages are exceptionally clean. I did not see any foxing. And, beside a very light bottom corner semi-crease on a couple of early pages, there's very little creasing in this book. There is a very tiny loss on the outer edge of the one-page Preface. There are no markings in the book. There are no attachments. And with the exception of the mystery inscription, no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. I've rated the book only Fair. This is entirely due to the binding issues.

(Complete). **** The book: A splendidly bound 1842 first edition of George Cruikshank's Omnibus, one of the key Victorian collections showcasing the illustrator's prodigious wit, technical mastery, and visual inventiveness. The volume gathers essays, tales, satirical pieces, and humorous sketches by Laman Blanchard and others, each accompanied by Cruikshank's dazzling engravings. This edition features the full suite of one hundred engravings, ranging from animated street scenes and character portraits to fantastical caricatures and social satire. Of special importance is the celebrated circular "Preface" plate ? a whirl of bustling figures, acrobatics, eccentricities, and comic chaos ? one of the most iconic graphic compositions in Cruikshank's oeuvre. The luxurious Bayntun binding elevates the work to collector-level presentation, combining a major Victorian illustrator with one of the finest English bookbinding houses of the 20th century. This is an exceptional example for any library focused on illustration, caricature, Victorian literature, or fine bindings.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. In Two Parts, Part One 153 pages, Part Two 189 pages. This book was purchased from a great grandchild of Nathaniel Hawthorne's in Redding, Connecticut. It bears the signature of Hawthorne's son, Julian Hawthorne, though it may have (or may not have) been earlier owned by Nathaniel Hawthorne, as it was published in 1846 and he passed away in 1864. 1846 is also the year of Julian Hawthorne's birth. He signed this book in 1873 when he was in Dresden, Germany, the same year he wrote a book titled Bressant. He met his future wife, Minne Amelung, while living in Europe. She was living in Redding, Connecticut at the time of her death in 1925. Julian Hawthorne's mother was Sophia Peabody, a painter and illustrator. Julian was a writer and journalist. He wrote in many genres: poems, novels, short stories, mysteries and detective fiction, essays, travel books, biographies, and histories. He also helped to found Cosmopolitan and Collier's Weekly. Late in his life he got into trouble with the law and spent a year in prison. You can see the marbled covers of the book in the photos. They have held up quite well, a small bit of scuffing at the tiny leather corners, also some scuffing on the rear side of the leather spine, reaching over just a little onto the marbled part of the rear cover. The leather spine looks pretty good. It has some darkening and soiling, particularly right off its top edge. The small gilt lettering is pretty bright but there is a small indent over the word 'Life'. The edges are in very nice shape with just some light rubbing on the two bottom ones. Each of the four corners have spots of rub-through. The page edges are also marbled. The spine has a forward lean, but the binding of the pages is quite solid all the way through. There is a thin space off the top edge of the juncture between the front inside cover and the signed front end paper. It only goes down 1 1/2 inches, and the front covers are nicely, tightly bound. There is also a space at the juncture between the rear inside cover and rear end paper. That space goes down a longer ways, leaving only the bottom 1 3/4 inches of the juncture free of a space. Nevertheless, the rear cover is also nicely, tightly bound. The pages are in good condition. There are no placeholder creases. I saw only eight consecutive pages with a small bottom corner crease, far from the print, and two consecutive pages with a very small top corner crease, also far from the print. However, the pages are foxed, all of them have foxing at their margins, and in not a few it makes its way beyond the margins. I have provided a photograph of a typical pair of pages. There are no markings in the book. No attachments of any kind. And Mr. Hawthorne's dated signature (see photo) is the only writing to be found anywhere.
