Larry Banville was a gamekeeper to Lord Buxton's great-great-grandfather from 1823 until his death forty six years later in1869. In his will Banville left four large volumes to a Buxton younger son, Charles with the wish that the journals be published. At last, more than a century later, that wish is being fulfilled. The diaries are not only about shooting and gamekeeping. They are primarily about people, in Banville's native Ireland as well as Scotland, Sweden and England. There are pungent comments on the local Norfolk gentry and on other gamekeepers - and vivid records of the true distress caused to ordinary villagers by the Corn Laws and Game Laws. The Banville Diaries are illustrated by contemporary drawings and paintings: landscapes from the Norfolk School and portraits by George Richmond as well as fine bird pictures by Archibald Thorburn.
