Here is a collection of some eight hundred limericks, together with a modest selection of material from what may be termed the 'Limerick Fringe'. But are they all 'good' limericks? And anyway, what is the justification for so large an anthology devoted to this simple verse form? One answer to the latter question would seem to be that the limerick arouses such strong feelings in its devotees. There are passionate views about what a limerick should or should not be, and what it ought or ought not to be about. No other verse form seems to give rise to such strong feelings of loyalty. The United States (where else?) even boasts at least two societies devoted to it.
