Six volumes in three books, bound in half calf. Volumes I to VI of Wilson's Tales of the Borders, and of Scotland, bound in a three volume set. The first volume contains Volume I and II; the second contains Volume III and IV; and the third contains Volume V and VI. There is a glossary to the rear of Volume VI. Each of the six volumes within the three volume set has a frontispiece and there are 24 further plates overall. In 1832, John Mackay Wilson (1804-1835), editor of the Berwick Advertiser, began publishing local stories, and by 1834 he published the first collection as Wilsons Tales of the Borders, and of Scotland. These local stories became very successful, and were continued after his death by his widow and new editors for a further 5 years. In half calf bindings. Externally smart, with bumping to the boards and rubbing to the extremities and the spine of each volume. Front hinges of first and third volumes are starting but firm. Internally, mostly firmly bound, except for the first volume, in which pages 11 to 18 and 27 to 32 are coming loose, and pages 19 to 26 are loose. Very Good. book.

Aggiungi al carrelloLeather. Condizione: Very Good. None (illustratore). A complete twenty-four volume collection of these traditional and imaginative tales from John Mackay Wilson, bound in twelve volumes. Complete in twenty-four volumes, bound in twelve. With a portrait frontispiece to volume one. A collection of historical, traditional, and imaginative tales of Scottish folklore that bring to life the rich tapestry of regional stories from across the country, passed down through generations. This anthology features a series of narrations that reflect the culture and historical events of the Scottish Borders, exploring themes of love, family, conflict, and community against the backdrop of the region's dramatic landscapes. With titles such as: The Vacant Chair, Recollections of Ferguson, The Professor's Tales, The Countess of Wistonbury, and Midside Maggy, amongst many others. Written by John Mackay Wilson, a Scottish writer and editor of the Berwick Advertiser. Whilst editor, Wilson began publishing local stories and their popularity led to him extending them into a weekly broadsheet. Although he died within a year, the Tales ran to over three hundred editions, offering almost five hundred short tales and serials with his obituary published in issue forty-nine. Revised by Alexander Leighton, a Scottish writer and editor, best known for this work. Dated from the University of Glasgow Library. Bound in half calf with marbled boards. Externally, smart with light rubbing to the extremities and the odd small mark to the boards. Minor loss to the head of the spine of volumes X and XI. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with light scattered spotting, predominantly to the fore-edge. The contents pages of each individual volume are bound at the front. Minor age toning to the endpapers with the previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown. Very Good. book.
