Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. William J. Campbell, Philadelphia, 1911, in two volumes, translated from the German edition of 1788 illustrated with a frontispiece and reproductions of the title page of the 1788 edition. 5.75" x 7.75". 426 + 344 pp. Green cloth. "First notable 18th century account of the United States by a German traveller" (Howes). ".one of the best accounts of travel in the newly established United States exclusive of New England" (Storm). Schoepf spent his years in the U.S. traveling and making note of the geology and botany as he made his way through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, the Carolinas, eastern Florida and the Bahamas. He also made good notes on the inhabitants, farms, iindustry, roads, etc. He compiled notes on the birds, but those were lost. This set includes three pages on the shad, and seven pages on rattlesnakes, snake bite and it treatment. There are a few mentions of mammals, also six pages on the fish and turtles of the Bahamas. An interesting account of the region by someone who traveled extensively. Very good.
