The set is divided into seven parts - Youth and Age, Love, Nature, Familiar Verse/Humor/Satire, Patriotism/History/Legend, Sentiment and Reflection, and Sorrow/Death/Immortality - each with sub-topics related to the overall heading. Arrangement is thematic rather than chronological, with the contents laid out by subject in the table of contents. The selection encompasses a range of poetic types - romantic, satiric, serious, humorous - and forms including ballads, quatrains, limericks, and sonnets. Each volume runs to nearly 2000 pages; page numbering continues directly from volume one to volume two, so the first page of poetry in volume two is page 1957.
