David Quammen (born February 24, 1948) is an American science, nature, and travel writer and the author of fifteen books. His articles have appeared in Outside Magazine, National Geographic, Harper's, Rolling Stone, The New York Times Book Review, The New Yorker, and other periodicals. In 1981, Quammen began writing columns for Outside Magazine, and continued for fifteen years. Some of the columns contributed to Quammen's nonfiction books: Natural Acts (1985), The Flight of the Iguana, Wild Thoughts from Wild Places, and The Boilerplate Rhino. Quammen worked with National Geographic, holding a Contributing Writer position, producing cover stories like "Was Darwin Wrong?" and "The Short Happy Life of a Serengeti Lion." From 2007 to 2009, Quammen was the Wallace Stegner Professor of Western American Studies at Montana State University. Charles Robert Darwin FRS FRGS FLS FZS JP (12 February 1809 - 19 April 1882) was an English naturalist, geologist, and biologist, widely known for his contributions to evolutionary biology. His proposition that all species of life have descended from a common ancestor is now generally accepted and considered a fundamental concept in science. In a joint publication with Alfred Russel Wallace, he introduced his scientific theory that this branching pattern of evolution resulted from a process he called natural selection, in which the struggle for existence has a similar effect to the artificial selection involved in selective breeding. Darwin has been described as one of the most influential figures in human history and was honored by burial in Westminster Abbey. This was published to mark the 150th anniversary of the publication of Charles Darwin s On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or the Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. In his landmark study, Darwin theorized that populations evolve over the course of generations through a process of natural selection. These ideas flew in the face of long-held beliefs, and the book immediately became one of the most controversial scientific works in history, and it still remains so today. Now, for the first time, Darwin s classic is fully and handsomely illustrated with more than 350 illustrations and photos, many of them in brilliant color.
