This early printing features the classic Art Nouveau-influenced cloth binding in brown with black and green pictorial stamping, ornate gilt endpaper designs, and a vibrant color frontispiece ('The Pied Piper of Hamelin'). The volume collects verse by major English and American poets including Shakespeare, Keats, Shelley, Wordsworth, Longfellow, Tennyson, Browning, Dickens, and many others. Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. No Jacket. Mabie, Hamilton Wright (editor); Hale, Edward Everett (associate editor). Young Folks' Treasury, Vol. IX: Men and Women of Achievement; Self-Help. New York: The University Society Inc., 1909 (copyright). Early printing, ca. 1909-1912. A beautifully preserved early printing of this installment of the Young Folks' Treasury, the University Society's richly illustrated 12-volume educational series first issued in 1909. Men and Women of Achievement; Self-Help presents lively biographical sketches of major historical and political figures - including Washington, Franklin, Jefferson, Lincoln, Hamilton, Grant, Roosevelt, Julius Caesar, Cromwell, Napoleon, and Bismarck - written by Elbridge S. Brooks, Wallace Wood, Ernest Ingersoll, Frederick G. Harrison, and others. Profusely illustrated with sepia photogravures (including the Rockwood portrait of Theodore Roosevelt), halftones, and multiple full-color plates, all present and bright. Bound in the publisher's striking Art Nouveau pictorial cloth with gilt spine lettering and decorative endpapers typical of the earliest production period. Condition: Near Fine, with exceptionally bright cloth, strong gilt, tight binding, clean decorated endpapers with only a small neat inscription, and a clean text block with minimal toning; plates pristine. No jacket issued. Edition/Printing: Copyright page states 'Copyright, 1909,' with no printing statement, as issued; binding style, paper stock, and endpapers correspond to early-issue production circa 1909-1912. Hamilton Wright Mabie (1846-1916) was a prominent American essayist, literary critic, and editor known for his educational work and accessible retellings of mythology and classic literature. His editorial leadership shaped numerous juvenile and family reference series during the Progressive Era. Edward Everett Hale (1822-1909) minister, author, and humanitarian, was one of the most influential public intellectuals of his era. Best remembered for 'The Man Without a Country,' Hale dedicated his career to educational reform, civic improvement, and popular historical writing.
