Au sujet de la signification de trois noms de districts chinois: "Depuis les Han, le Siu-Tcheou du Kiang-nan a conservé le même nom [.]. En remontant plus haut, ce nom désigne dans le chapitre Yu-kong du Chou-xing, le pays compris entre le mont Tchaï-chan du Chang-toung et le Hoaï, pays essentiellement montagneux. Le nom de Hoaï-Tcheou a été porté, sous les Thang, par l'arrondissement de Thang, dont le chef-lieu est situé sur un affluent du Hoaï-ho et dépend de Nan-Yang-fou (Ho-nan). Ce nom a pu aussi, vers la même époque, désigner une partie du pays arrosé par la rivière Hoaï, qui se jette dans le Hoang-ho près de son embouchure actuelle. Le nom de Hou-kiun n'est pas dans mon Dictionnaire [.]. Le mot Kiun désignait au 3e siècle avant l'ère chrétienne, des provinces ou grands districts. Thsin-chi-hoang en avait établi trente-six dont plusieurs avaient le nom de Kiun. Plus tard ce même mot a désigné des départements.". Il est ensuite question d'une étoffe dont le nom ne se trouve pas dans le Tcheou-li, puis de son élection à l'Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres, où il entrera la même année. Ingénieur et sinologue, Édouard Biot (1803-1850) est l'auteur de nombreux ouvrages et mémoires concernant l'astronomie, les sciences, la géographie, l'histoire, la vie sociale et l'administration de la Chine. Il publia, en 1842, un Dictionnaire des noms anciens et modernes des villes et arrondissements dans l'Empire chinois. Son correspondant, Natalis Rondot (1821-1900), était un économiste qui participa, en 1843, à une mission extraordinaire envoyée en Chine pour y négocier des traités de commerce ; il contribua ensuite au développement de l'industrie de la soie à Lyon.
