Finely bound example of Vachon's biography of Detaille from the library of Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor. Folio, bound in three quarter morocco, illustrated. Presentation copy, inscribed by Edouard Detaille in French to Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor in the year of Detaille's death. The inscription translates as: "My Lord, In my Boulevard Malesherbes Studio, where his Majesty King Edward Vii and His Majesty King George have often come, your Royal Highness found himself at home. It is a great honor for me and also a great pleasure that I am happy to witness. Your Royal Highness, with the assurance of my faithful and respectful devotion. Edouard Detaille June 20 1912." From the collection of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor. Edward VIII, Duke of Windsor became the second monarch of the House of Windsor upon King George IV's death in 1936. The new king showed impatience with court protocol, and caused concern among politicians by his apparent disregard for established constitutional conventions. Only months into his reign, a constitutional crisis was caused by his proposal to marry Wallis Simpson, an American who had divorced her first husband and was seeking a divorce from her second. When it became apparent he could not marry Wallis and remain on the throne, he abdicated. He was succeeded by his younger brother, George VI.ÂIn good condition.
