Aggiungi al carrelloFirst Edition. First printing. Octavo. Blue cloth hardcover, titled in gilt on front cover; 105pp. Chafed at joints and board edges; lightly soiled overall; just Very Good. Lengthily inscribed on front endpaper by James Morris Morgan, with an original poem: "To Ensign John G Phelps, USNR from James Morris Morgan / formerly a [?]… midshipman in the late C.S. Navy," with ten lines of verse following, beginning "Three cheers! cried Mr. Morgan." This was Marquand's first book appearance, foreshadowing a long and distinguished career in fiction, including a Pulitzer Prize novel, The Late George Apley (1938). Admiral Clark, whose anecdotes are recounted here, was "one of the best-known and most admired officers in the U.S. Navy" (DAB), over a career that spanned nearly forty-five years and included service in both the Civil War and the Spanish-American War. James Morris Morgan (1845-1928) was a junior Naval officer during the Civil War; his memoir, Recollections of a Rebel Reefer (1917) is considered a high-spot of Civil War literature. Signed.
