Seckendorf-Gudent wurde am 3. Mai 1813 zu…Stuttgart als der Sohn des königl. württembergischen Oberregierungsraths und Kammerherrn Karl Ernst Julius Freiherrn v. S. geboren, erhielt seine Erziehung theils in dem v. Liederskron'schen Erziehungsinstitut zu Erlangen, theils in dem Gymnasium zu Ellwangen und widmete sich von 1831 bis 1836 an der Universität Tübingen dem Studium der Rechte, der Philosophie und Philologie. Nachdem er durch Erstehung der zweiten Staatsprüfung 1838 die Befähigung zum Richteramte erlangt hatte, ließ er sich bei verschiedenen Gerichtsstellen, in Calw, Ulm und Stuttgart verwenden, verließ aber schon 1840 nach dem Tode seiner Mutter den Staatsdienst, um sich ausschließlich der Schriftstellerei zu widmen. Er begab sich nach Tübingen, später nach Stuttgart und beschäftigte sich vorwiegend mit der Herausgabe mehrerer Uebersetzungen. Im August 1847 erhielt er die Stelle eines Commissärs der deutschen Bundesversammlung bei dem Archiv des früheren Reichskammergerichts in Wetzlar, trat nach Auflösung desselben (1852) und nachdem er 1852 zum königl. württemberg. Kammerherrn ernannt worden war, 1854 in den württembergischen Staatsdienst zurück, wurde zunächst als Secretär am Staatsarchiv in Stuttgart beschäftigt und erhielt 1868 die Leitung des Filialarchivs in Ludwigsburg und 1872 den Titel eines Hofraths. Am 19. October 1875 verunglückte er beim Aussteigen aus einem Waggon in Ludwigsburg. S. war eine in Schwaben und Franken weithin bekannte und allgemein beliebte, höchst originelle Persönlichkeit und besaß das besondere Talent witziger, pikanter Improvisation. Seine dichterische Laufbahn begann er schon als Student mit dem Trauerspiel "Der Irre", das er unter dem Namen Odoardo herausgab (1834); später übertrug er mit A. Keller "Volkslieder aus der Bretagne" ins Deutsche (1841); besonders aber machte er sich in weiteren Kreisen durch seine geistreiche Parodie auf Schiller's Glocke "Der Civil-Prozeß" bekannt (1843). In seinen "Gedichten", wovon eine Auswahl nach seinem Tode erschien (1877) lehnte sich S. zum Theil an Uhland, seinen Lehrer, und Schwab, zum Theil an Heine an, zeigt aber dabei doch eine eigenthümliche freie Empfindung, gesunden Humor und treffende Pointe.
