Siegfried Breyer was one of the world s greatest experts on German warship design and the author of many well regarded books. Admiral Graf Spee was a Deutschland-class "Panzerschiff, nicknamed a "pocket battleship" by the British, which served with the Kriegsmarine of Germany during World War II. The vessel was named after Admiral Maximilian von Spee, commander of the East Asia Squadron who fought the battles of Coronel and the Falkland Islands in WWI. She was laid down at the Reichsmarinewerft shipyard in 1932 and completed by 1936. The ship was nominally under the 10,000 long tons limitation on warship size imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, though with a full load displacement of 16,020 long tons, she significantly exceeded it. Armed with six (11 in guns in two triple gun turrets, Admiral Graf Spee and her sisters were designed to outgun any cruiser fast enough to catch them. Their top speed of 28 knots (32 mph) left only the few battlecruisers in the Anglo-French navies fast enough and powerful enough to sink them. Presumed First U.S. Edition, First printing.

With a Special Section "Current Naval Information". Cover has minor wear and soiling. Siegfried Breyer was one of the world s greatest experts on German warship design and the author of many well regarded books. Gneisenau was a German capital ship, alternatively described as a battleship and battlecruiser, of Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. She was the second vessel of her class, which included one other ship, Scharnhorst. The ship was built at the Deutsche Werke dockyard in Kiel; she was laid down in 1935 and launched on 8 December 1936. Completed in May 1938, the ship was armed with a main battery of nine 11 in C/34 guns in three triple turrets, though there were plans to replace these weapons with six 15 in SK C/34 guns in twin turrets. Gneisenau and Scharnhorst operated together for much of the early portion of World War II, including sorties into the Atlantic to raid British merchant shipping. During their first operation, the two ships sank the British auxiliary cruiser HMS Rawalpindi in a short battle. Gneisenau and Scharnhorst participated in Operation Weserübung, the German invasion of Norway. Presumed First U.S. Edition, First printing.

This book was originally published under the title: "Die Duetsche Kriegsmarine 1935-1945, Band 5 by Podzun-Pallas-Verlag, 1989. Siegfried Breyer was one of the world s greatest experts on German warship design and the author of many well regarded books. Gerhard Koop served in both the Kriegsmarine and the postwar Bundesmarine, and became one of German's leading authorities on warship design and the author of numerous highly regarded books. Covers all of the main German battleships of WWII, including Bismarck, Gneisenau, Scharnhorst, Tirpitz and other big ships in over 300 photos. In this volume, the authors present their book on the 'big ships": the battleships, pocket battleships, aircraft carrier, and cruisers. The chronology begins in 1935 and the fleet agreement with England, and continues to the end of 1945, when the last big ships sand in a hail of Anglo-America bombs, or fell into Allied hands. This fascinating large pictorial volume also includes the Z-Plan of 1939 with its projected super-battleships. A genuine richness of data and information, this noteworthy documentation belongs in the hands of every naval historian, naval technologist, and naval enthusiast. Presumed First U.S. Edition, First printing.
