Born in 1841 in Charleston, South Carolina, American genre painter Edward Lamson Henry studied at the school of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia and with Gleyre and Courbet in Paris. In 1885, he moved to upstate New York, becoming one of the founders of the Cragsmoor Art Colony (he died in Cragsmoor in 1919). A prolific artist, in 1870 his peers elected him to the National Academy of Design. Henry was widely appreciated as an artful storyteller who meticulously and lovingly documented places and events, particularly those associated with early America and the Civil War. He depicted incidents of stage coach and canal boat journeys and early railroad travel, rendered with much detail. His art of such colonial and early American themes and incidents of rural life displays a quaint humor and a profound knowledge of human nature. For a new generation interested in American art, this book places Henry firmly among the important 19th century painters --focusing on the artist's fascination with pictorial visions of historical sites and incidents.
