Rare Detailed 1851 Plan of Quebec City, Compiled by Prominent Architect Edward StaveleyIn Peter Sinclair's Quebec Pocket Guidebook. This finely executed 1851 lithographed map of Quebec City was compiled by English-born ci. 16mo. Light scattered foxing to text. Map quite clean and nice. Rare Detailed 1851 Plan of Quebec City, Compiled by Prominent Architect Edward StaveleyIn Peter Sinclair's Quebec Pocket Guidebook. This finely executed 1851 lithographed map of Quebec City was compiled by English-born civil engineer and architect Edward Staveley. Published by Peter Sinclair to accompany The New Guide to Quebec and Its Environs, the map details the city's urban layout during a period of rapid mid-century expansion. Still firmly bound into its original patterned boards, the plan captures the street networks of the Upper and Lower Towns, setting them against the newly subdivided residential suburbs and the extensive military installations dominating the landscape.Although Edward Staveley's name does not appear on the map's imprint, his definitive authorship is established by bibliographical records of his 1851 business account books, preserved by his grandson and successor, architect Edward Black Staveley. The map was expressly commissioned by Peter Sinclair, a prominent local bookseller, stationer, and publisher based on John Street. It was issued as a folded insert to The New Guide to Quebec and Its Environs, a tourist volume distributed locally by Sinclair and co-published in Montreal by the firm of Armour & Ramsay. By retaining its physical attachment to the original binding, this copy preserves its rare context as a functional mid-19th-century traveler's pocket guide. The cartographic coverage extends from the Plains of Abraham and the imposing heights of Cape Diamond in the southwest to the sweeping loops of the St. Charles River in the northeast. The waterfront along the St. Lawrence River is intensely detailed, delineating individual wharves and commercial slips such as Napoleon Wharf, Queen's Wharf, and Charles Wharf, which together facilitated the city's vital maritime trade.A comprehensive legend at the lower right systematically lists forty-six major points of interest, categorizing them across four municipal districts: Upper Town, Lower Town, the Parish of St. Roch, and the St. John and St. Louis Suburbs. Within the Upper Town, markers identify crucial administrative and religious sites, including the Old Chateau, the Parliament Buildings, the Ursuline Convent, and the Jesuit Barracks. The Lower Town directory highlights the city's financial heart, locating the Bank of British North America, the Quebec Bank, and the Custom House.Military and Civic InfrastructureMilitary installations define the western perimeter of the older city. The Citadel, perched 350 feet above the river on Cape Diamond, commands the defensive network, supported by the Esplanade, Artillery Barracks, and multiple prominent Martello towers (labeled "No. 1 Tower", "No. 2 Tower", and "No. 3 Tower") arrayed across the Plains of Abraham. Signs of civic modernization appear in the inclusion of the municipal "Gas Works" and the "Govt. Pull Yard," illustrating a city transitioning toward industrialization.Health and DemographicsAmong the most poignant historical features noted within the suburban expansion are the "Cholera Burial Ground" and adjacent "Catholic Burial Ground," located just west of the city limits near the Plains of Abraham, alongside another "Catholic Cholera Ground" marked in the Parish of St. Roch. These somber cartographic elements serve as stark reminders of the severe cholera epidemics. Book.
