Stillingfleet's first book 'The Irenicum' was published in 1659. The book suggested a compromise between the church and the Presbyterians. He dissented from this point of view in later years. In 1662 his second work 'Origines Sacrae' was published, about which was said in "Bentley's 'Life'" would 'have been deservedly esteemed a most complete performance for one of more than twice his age'. This was an apologetic work on an historical basis, asserting the divine authority of the scriptures. Bishop Robert Sanderson of Lincoln was greatly struck by it. When Sanderson saw Stillingfleet at a visitation he was astonished at his youth, and gave him a general license as preacher in his diocese on 16 Oct. 1662. Similarly impressed by the learning of the 'Origines' Bishop Henchman requested the author to answer the jesuit acc't of the controversy between Laud and Fisher. He did this in 'A Rational Acc't of the Ground of the Protestant Religion 1664. He later engaged in a controversy with Locke on the doctrined of the Trinity. His valuable library was offered for sale after his death, and his manuscripts were purchased by Robert Harley, and became part of the Harleian Miscellany.
