Unbound. Condizione: Near Fine. A small collection of six letters with four of their original envelopes. Old folds from mailing, else very near fine with just a bit of wear, the envelopes with stains, tears from opening, and moderate wear along the other edges. The letters, which are dated from March, 1881 to January, 1887, are addressed to Edward Winterer of Le Sueur, Minnesota, Five are written by his older sister Bertha, with one written by his older sister Emma. Edward was one of twelve children raised in Minnesota by German immigrants. The letters are mostly a recap of home life, with references to visitors, butchering and making sausage, harvesting potatoes and corn, their Thanksgiving turkey, a County Fair, and the weather. There are many mentions of ill family members, several stating that their mother was not doing well. During the timeline of the letters, Edward's mother, two brothers, and a sister passed away. The letters make no direct mention of the deaths. Edward, an attorney by trade, moved to Los Angeles in the early 1900's, where he lived until his passing in 1943. A brief look into the lives of a Midwest family in the late 19th century.
