Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. 1st Edition. Edwards, Mrs. [sic, actually Mrs. Annie Edwardes]. Steven Lawrence, Yeoman. A Novel . Elegantly Illustrated. Author's Edition -- Printed from Advanced Sheets. New York: Sheldon & Co., [n.d. circa 1868]. First U.S. edition probably. Tall octavo, pp. [1-5] 6-422 [423-424: blank] [fly leaf…at front and at rear]. Original blue decorative cloth, front panel stamped in black, spine panel in gold and black, rear panel in blind, yellow coated endpapers. Illustration on inserted frontispiece. Early ownership signature (with flourishes) dated 1876 on front free endpaper. Cloth worn at extremities, otherwise a nice enough copy, soundly bound and clean internally. #764. $45. (extra postage for this) Originally published in three volumes by Bentley in 1868, this novel was immediately published on the continent by Tauchnitz and saw at least two more editions in America as late as the 1880s. The publisher William Tinsley called her a clever writer who could change her style at will. Sutherland comments (after recounting this point), "Her early work is 'sensational' and reminiscent of Rhoda Broughton . it often had a somewhat risqué quality and was occasionally banned by the librarian Mudie." The present title is "the story of two cousins' ruthless rivalry in love for the hero." (ibid, Companion to Victorian Fiction, pp. 205-206). Wolff, in his entry for the Bentley three-decker (2006), notes that Bentley paid Edwardes 400 pounds for the copyright to this title, which put her in the major leagues of commercially successful writers.
