Bound in half red morocco. On the spine five raised bands with gilt lines and gilt lettering to the second panel. Gilt to top of text block. Marbled endpapers. Extremities rubbed. Some light spotting. Small marginal hole to pp. 133-134 (not affecting text) and a tear at outer margin of pp. 223-224 (not affecting text). Plate 53 placed between plates 29 and 30. The plates were originally produced for R.W. Dickson's A Complete Dictionary of Practical Gardening, 1805-07. Born in Wales, Sydenham T. Edwards (1768-1819) moved to London in 1788 to illustrate for Botanical Magazine for whom he painted over 1,700 watercolors. He was a natural history illustrator, who depicted plants, birds and dogs, notably dog breeds of Great Britain. Bookplate on the front pastedown of Henry Rogers Broughton, 2nd Baron Fairhaven.
