One chapter, entitled "The Negro Wedding," is an account of the protagonist attending a "jubilee" wedding of former slaves, and African-American characters and dialect appear throughout the book, including in a chapter entitled "Bloody N----r," which opens with an African-American man bleeding after a fight. Unusual for these accounts of the life of freedmen in the Northeast.
