'Vessel Design' war der Fachterminus des US-amerikanischen Process Engineering der 1950er Jahre. Die Autoren untersuchten Druckbehälter (Reaktoren, Separatoren, Lagertanks, Drucktöpfe); Atmosphärische Behälter (Lagertanks, Mischbehälter, Kolonnenmäntel); äußere Hüllen von Destillations- und Absorptionskolonnen, Spezialgefäße, Autoklaven, Filterbehälter, Druckreaktoren. Sie sortierten ihre Ergebnisse in vier Problemfelder: (1) Behälterauslegung. Ihr Buch behandelte die mechanische und thermische Auslegung von Prozessbehältern: Druckbehälter, Lagertanks, Reaktoren, Kolonnenmäntel, horizontale und vertikale Gefäße. (2) Spannungsanalyse. Brownell & Young führten die damals moderne Spannungsanalyse ein: Zylinder- und Kugelspannungen, Bödenformen, Stutzenverstärkungen, Schweißnahtbemessung. (3) Materialwahl. St ähle, Legierungen, Korrosionsschutz, Temperatur- und Druckgrenzen. Betrieb und Sicherheit. (4) Sicherheitsventile, Prüfverfahre , Inspektion, frühe Normbezüge (ASME, API).Konstruktionspraxis. Das Ganze garnierten sie mit vielen Diagrammen, Tabellen, Bemessungsbeispielen. MG und Lurgi bauten und betrieben Anlagen, in denen Druckbehälter zentrale Apparate waren: Reaktoren, Separatoren, Kolonnenmäntel, Lagertanks, Autoklaven. Brownell & Young liefern die mechanische Auslegung dieser Apparate Wanddicken, Spannungen, Bödenformen, Stutzenverstärkungen. Und sie dokumentierten dabei den US-amerikanischen Wissensstanad.
