It also examines the distribution of shrimping efforts and the extent to which fishermen discard small shrimp. The author provides data that t…he average size of shrimp increases with depth and with northerly distance from the Florida Keys. Small shrimp were discovered to be more abundant from September through May and they appeared on the eastern and southeastern portions of the grounds, where most of the highest try net catches were made. The study revealed that very little discarding took place from June through November 1958, and that shrimp were only discarded when few were caught, and it was not worth the effort of icing them separately from the rest of the catch. This data contributes to our understanding of the Tortugas shrimp fishery and can help inform future management decisions.
