Cloth Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. A clean, tight copy sans tears, stains, and markings. From the author's Preface: "Believing the book entitled "Ships That Pass in the Night," though containing many good things, is calculated to do harm, offering, as it does, nothing better than a mere guess for a dying pillow, I have writen the present volume with hope, among other things, that the reader may not only be entertained by the story, but finish its pages with the conviction that immortality is something more, than a guess, and that the human ship, instead of sailing in the "night," has before it, in spite of occasional clouds and uncertainties an open sea and the clear light of day." Blue cloth boards with black lettering and a woman and man in a sailboat illustration on the front cover.451 pages. LG2.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No. First Edition. Boston: James H. Earle, 1896. First edition [1896]. Illustrated with black and white plates. Dark blue cloth lettered and decorated in gilt and black. Edges rubbed, mainly the corners and spine ends, sound binding, outer edges of text block foxed, a bit of light foxing to the title page, personal ex-libris stamps on both front endpapers, pages clean and otherwise unmarked. First Edition. Hard Cover. Good/No. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: No Dust Jacket. First Edition; First Printing. Brown cloth with somewhat faded black titles and illustration. Gilt title on spine. Book has some edge and corner wear but is square and securely bound. Some tearing of endpapers along front hinge that does not affect the binding. On the back endpaper there is some scrawled writing and large initials in white ink. ; B&W Illustrations; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 451 pages; Book is basically a love story set along the Connecticut River, but there are a couple of interesting variations. One chapter, entitled "The Negro Wedding," is an account of the protagonist attending a "jubilee" wedding of former slaves, and African-American characters and dialect appear throughout the book, including in a chapter entitled "Bloody N----r," which opens with an African-American man bleeding after a fight. Unusual for these accounts of the life of freedmen in the Northeast.

This book examines the origins and development of democratic processes allowing citizens to directly participate in shaping policy and legislation, such as referendums and initiatives. The author traces the inception of these practices from their roots in ancient Greece and medieval New England town hall meetings, to their implementation in modern democratic states, particularly the United States. The book explores the various forms these democratic tools have taken and the ways in which they have been used to empower citizens and shape public policy, providing a comprehensive understanding of their historical evolution and contemporary significance. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
