Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. This volume, edited by Giulinao Castagna and Lutz Edzard, unites six articles based on presentations at the workshop "South Arabia: Old Issues, New Perspectives", held on December 19, 2019 at the University of Erlangen-Nurnberg, as well as a contribution by Alessandra Serpone on a related subject. The contributions range all the way from morpho-phonology over syntax to issues of genetic relationship and semantics. Sabrina Bendjaballah and Philippe Segeral open the discussion with an analysis of quadri- and quinque-literal roots in Omani Mehri. Alessandra Serpone reconsiders the emergence and distribution of the k-suffix, traditionally considered to be a South-Semitic feature, across Semitic. Lutz Edzard looks at the functional spectrum of the -st-diatheses in Jibbali in a comparative Semitic perspective. Fabio Gasparini applies the current research on clause linking, notably on the relationship of syntactic coordination and subordination, to Mehri. Roger Blench takes a fresh look at the genetic position of Modern South Arabian within South Semitic. Letizia Cerqueglini specifically investigates the relationship of Egyptian and Semitic from a South Arabian perspective. Finally, Giuliano Castagna highlights a possible Austronesian lexical substratum in Modern South Arabian. Aggiungi al carrelloCondizione: Neu. An Alternative Model of Linguistic Evolution Applied to Semitic Linguistics. In this study, the author challenges the traditional monogenetic "family tree" model (including wave-theoretical emendations) as an appropriate representation for genetic relationship within language families. As a viable alternative, he proposes a polygenetic model which applies the notions of "convergence" and "entropy" to linguistic evolution. A section discussing specific problems in Afro-Asiatic at large is followed by an analogous section dealing with specific problems in Semitic. One major portion of the discussion revolves around a number of longstanding problems in connection with phoneme inventories and sound change in Semitic. This is supplemented by analogous deliberations on morphology and the syntax of complex noun phrases. Special attention is paid to the issue of "bi-radicalism" vs. "tri-radicalism" Another focus of the discussion is on the issue of diglossia or polyglossia in Arabic in the light of the proposed theory, and on selected current issues in the history of Arabic linguistics. 207 Seiten mit 92 Tab., broschiert (Harrassowitz Verlag 1998). This is a detailed study on the insertion of epenthetic vowels in verbal and nominal forms primae and mediae gutturalis, in Biblical Hebrew, as well as in normative and spoken Modern Hebrew. The monograph aims at showing the following: 1) Apparent irregularity in a linguistic system, here on the phonological level, can be resolved within a network of transparent rules, which reflect the interaction of various parameters. 2) The tension between the norm and the corresponding reality in a linguistic system is by no means just a modern phenomenon, but can, in the case of Hebrew, be traced all the way back to the classical stages of said linguistic system. 3) The sonority scale in conjunction with the relevant preference laws for syllable structure has once again proven to be a powerful explanatory device in phonological theory and emerged as the central argument in the context of our research. 4) Optimality Theory offers a theoretical framework for arranging an array of relevant constraints in order to account for the variety of observable output forms in the Tiberian Hebrew tradition, many forms of which continue to be valid in modern times. 304 Seiten mit 19 Abb. und zahlreichen Tab., broschiert (Abhandlungen für die Kunde des Morgenlandes; Band 66/Harrassowitz Verlag 2009).
