[From front jacket flap] Latin American relicarios, lockets containing miniature religious paintings or sculptures, are a folk-art form whose origins are found in early Christian practices. Their evolution is one that parallels the history of Christian devotion and imagery beginning in the early middle ages with the cult of relics. As with so much of European culture that was transferred to the New World in the sixteenth century, the practice of making and using reliquary objects dovetailed neatly with the indigenous peoples' beliefs and practices in the Americas. [This book] presents one hundred twenty-five magnificent pieces dating from the Roman Empire of the second century through Byzantium in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries to a thorough documentation of late European and Spanish and Portuguese New World developments. . . Contents include: Prologue by Teresa Gisbert; Preface; Introduction; Reliquary Traditions in Europe; The Cult of Relics in the New World; Relicarios in the Viceroyalty of New Spain; Escudos de Monja: A Genre of New Spain Relicarios; The Agnus Dei: A Relicario Tradition in Wax; The Relicarios of Spanish South America; Luso-Brazilian Relicario Traditions; Relicario Traditions in the Philippines; Glossary; Bibliography; Index.…
