Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: New. This is the eighth volume of the series The Legacy of Slavery and Indentured Labour. It covers the post slavery period of the long nineteenth century and its continuities into much of the first half of the twentieth century. From a geopolitical perspective, the essays collectively encompass the Francophone territories in the Indian Ocean, as well as the Anglophone, Francophone, and Dutch Caribbean and Latin America. Within almost each essay, a myriad of multidimensional issues is foregrounded. To the credit of the authors, these matters are well supported by the historical and historiographical backgrounds that set the situational context for the reader. The themes raised juxtapose a wide array of data on First Nations, European colonization, African New World enslavement and resistance (including marronage), and debates surrounding the abolition of slavery. They also address emancipation in practice, post-slavery in-migrations, indentured labour, and the intersections of African, Indian, and Jewish diasporas, issues of continuities and adjustments, and challenges of present-day living, including the integration of social groups and the consolidation of the nation-state. Readers are treated to multidisciplinary and comparative analyses. Collectively, the essays encompass the disciplines of history, sociology, anthropology, philology, and literary criticism.
