Wolfgang Fritz Volbach (1892-1988), Spezialist auf dem Gebiet der frühchristlichen und byzantinischen Kunst, gehört zu den Wissenschaftlern, die Deutschland auf Grund der Verfolgung durch die Nationalsozialisten verlassen mussten. Von 1917 bis 1933 arbeitete Volbach an den Berliner Museen, zuerst unter Wilhelm von Bode, bald an der Seite von Oskar Wulff, der die Frühchristlich-Byzantinische Sammlung betreute und dessen Nachfolger er 1927 wurde. Es war Volbachs großes Verdienst, eine Reihe noch heute gültiger Bestandskataloge zu erarbeiten, die Sammlung um Kunst aus Russland und den Ostkirchen zu erweitern und sie 1933 nach modernen Gesichtspunkten neu aufzustellen. Noch im selben Jahr wurde er auf Grund der antisemitischen nationalsozialistischen Gesetzgebung entlassen. Volbach fand eine Anstellung am Museo Sacro am Vatikan und überlebte die NS-Zeit in Rom. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg kehrte er nach Deutschland zurück. Der Ausstellungskatalog stellt unveröffentlichte Dokumente vor und behandelt Museumsobjekte, mit denen sich Volbach beschäftigt hat.
