Softcover. Small Quarto. Softcover. Illustrated wraps. 89 pages : illustrations (some colour) ; 25 cm. Dutch text. After approximately two years of negotiations, Adriaan Pauw purchased the lordship of Heemstede, including the castle, for 36,000 guilders from the heirs of Hendrik van Hovijne at the end of 1620. The Amsterdam merc…hant had himself paid a considerably higher sum of 75,000 carolus guilders in 1607. By the end of his life, Pauw owned a dozen lordships, and in his time, they were sometimes derisively referred to as a "Peacock's Tail." Heemstede was by far the most important to him. He transformed the medieval castle into a Renaissance summer residence and also lived in Amsterdam until 1627, and subsequently in a city palace in The Hague. Roads and waterways were constructed in Heemstede during Pauw's administration, the bleaching and weaving industries were promoted, and in just over three decades the population quadrupled from approximately 350 to between 1300 and 1400. Mr. D.J. van Houten, a retired diplomat and heir of Mrs. C.C. van Houten-Beels, published a new, significant publication, "Adriaan Pauw and Heemstede Castle: A Luxurious Pleasure Garden for a Distinguished Regent." It contains 17 chapters focusing on 17th-century paintings, drawings, and engravings in the family's possession. VG. Bookplate from National Gallery of Art Library stamped withdrawn.
