Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book presents a fascinating and meticulously researched account of Barbara Fritchie, the woman immortalized in John Greenleaf Whittier's famous poem. It delves into the life and legacy of this historical figure, exploring her experiences as a resident of Frederick, Maryland, during the tumultuous years of the American Revolution and the Civil War. The author, a great-grandniece of Barbara Fritchie, uses family records and historical documentation to provide a compelling portrait of her ancestorââ â¢s life, including her strong beliefs in patriotism and the Union, and her willingness to stand up for what she believed in, even in the face of danger. The book also examines the controversy surrounding the poem "Barbara Fritchie," exploring the debate over its factual accuracy and the cultural impact of its portrayal of Fritchie as a symbol of American defiance. Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - In the streets of Frederick, Maryland, one small gesture became a nation-shaping story. A town, a flag, defiance. Miss Eleanor D. Abbott revisits the Barbara Fritchie legend that inspired John Greenleaf Whittier, tracing how a local woman rose into a whittier heroine narrative of loyalty in a divided land.Part biographical sketch booklet, part collectible local history pamphlet, this concise portrait sets the scene around Frederick Maryland landmarks and the Maryland Civil War era that framed the famous union flag defiance tale. Alongside the life and reputation of its heroine, Abbott points readers towards the town itself, highlighting places and points of interest with the practicality of a historic sites travel guide. The result is ideal for civil war history fans and casual readers who want the human scale behind a public myth, and for Maryland heritage travellers planning a walk through Frederick's enduring streetscape. Its straightforward prose and period perspective capture the texture of small-town remembrance, where fact, family story, and civic pride still quietly meet today. As a cultural artefact, the booklet illuminates the afterlife of American patriotic poetry: how verse can fix a moment in memory, and how communities carry that memory forward. Republished by Alpha Editions in a careful modern edition, this volume preserves the spirit of the original while making it effortless to enjoy today, a heritage title prepared for readers and collectors alike. For John Greenleaf Whittier readers, it is a companion piece; for classic-literature collectors, a resonant keepsake of place, legend, and history.…
